In 1852 he was appointed director of the fossil department at the Crystal Palace, where he worked with Richard Owen on the famous models of dinosaurs and other extinct lifeforms. Plate to Thomas Dunham Whitaker's (1759 - 1821) ‘History and Antiquities of the Deanery of Craven,’ 1805, 2nd edition. Gisburne Park in Lancashire's Ribble Valley was home to a herd of cattle said to be descended from the ancient wild cattle of Britain. In the 19th century the cattle became tame and decreased in numbers to around seven or eight animals, these were kept on the estate and became more and more "in bred". Eventually only bulls were born and the Gisburne 'White Bulls' died out by 1859.

A large group of cattle at Barnet Fair. Barnet Fair was founded in 1588 when Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to the Lord of the manor of Barnet to hold a fair twice yearly. In 1834, 'The Times' newspaper reported that Barnet Fair was England's largest cattle market, with up to 40,000 animals on display. A Hereford Cow, known for its distinct red colour, white head and underbody. It is from a beef cattle breed, widely found in intemperate and temperate areas around the world. International export trade began in 1817 starting in Kentucky, United States. These are the original coloured prints issued at 5 shillings each. An Alderney Bull, from Earl How's Stock.

The Alderney was a breed of dairy cattle originating from the British Channel Island of Alderney, though no longer found on the island. The pure breed is now extinct, though hybrids still exist. George Garrard (1760 - 1826) was an animal painter who turned his attention to the making of casts and models of many subjects, but mainly of domestic animals. He was sponsored by the fifth Duke of Bedford, who was the first president of the Smithfield Club (founded I798), and by the third Earl of Egremont, as well as by other members of the Board of Agriculture. Garrard called his house in Hanover Square, London, 'The Agricultural Museum,' and from there he sold his paintings, engraving and models.
